Configuring Fedora Services on UNAVCO Field Computers

Upon installing Fedora there are several services enabled. You can check which services are running with:

[root@hostname]# chkconfig --list | grep on

Services are daemons that run in the background and enable the use of various applications. These programs can leave a system vulnerable to attacks. It is good to disable services that you do not need. The command to disable services is:

[root@hostname]# chkconfig --del name-of-service

In a minimal install of a Fedora 4 system you typically only need the following services enabled:

acpid	0:off	1:off	2:off	3:on	4:on	5:on	6:off
anacron	0:off	1:off	2:on	3:on	4:on	5:on	6:off
apcupsd	0:off	1:off	2:on	3:on	4:on	5:on	6:off

crond	0:off	1:off	2:on	3:on	4:on	5:on	6:off

Many services come with .conf files that can be edited and configured. After changing anything in a .conf file for a particular service you must restart the service. Services can be restarted by running the following command:

[root@hostname]# service < service-name > restart

Note that the above listing includes the services apcupsd and ntpd, which you may need to install manually.

Also note that new editions of Fedora initialize default services upon install. Many of these new default services may not be needed. We will post service lists for new editions of Fedora as UNAVCO starts deploying these new editions.
